Body Composition in More Detail

Body weight comprises of 4 components: body water, protein, mineral and fat and these components are well balanced in a healthy body. However, their imbalance shows symptoms below: 

  • Excessive Fat-Obesity

  • Mineral Deficiency-Osteoporosis 

  • Imbalanced Water-Edema

  • Protein Deficiency-Malnutrition

Obesity Diagnosis

BMI: Body Mass Index (kg/m2) is an index used to determine the degree of obesity by calculating weight (kg) relative to height (m2) as it only considers weight and height. BMI can only diagnose obesity on surface level.

Percent Body Fat: Percent body fat not only considers weight but also takes proportion of body fat mass in weight to determine the degree of obesity. Weight alone does not necessarily define obesity but rather as more muscle content yields greater body mass, percent body fat is more importantly considered than body weight in diagnosis of obesity.  

Waist-hip Ratio (WHO): The circumference ratio between waist and hip is used to determine abdominal fat. WHR greater than 0/90 in females and 0.95 in males is considered as abdominal obesity. In adults, abdominal obesity is mostly due to accumulation of visceral fat which increases concentration of free fat molecules in blood vessels causing obesity related diseases such as hypertension cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. 

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)

BMR is the minimal energy needed to sustain life such as body functions and homeostasis. Although weight and height are the same, one with more muscle has the higher BMR thus, consumes more calories even when the same calories are taken. Comparing to normal ranges in the parenthesis, when it is less, it is recommended to increase muscle mass through strength training. 

BMR is used to calculate daily total energy expenditure (TEE) by multiplying the coefficient of physical activity. 1.3 Which is based on a low activity. 

Ex) if BMR – 1200kcal. TEE recommended is 1200 x 1.3 = 1560kcal

Segmental Lean Evaluation

It evaluates the degree of muscle development in each segment. The more muscle you have, the healthier you are. If the amount is under the normal range, build more muscle in balance with strength training. 

Segmental Fat Evaluation

It reflects fat distribution of each segment. Although height, weight and fat mass are the same, different fat distribution will give different physical figures. Depending on excess accumulation site, it can be divided into upper body obesity and lower body obesity. 

Muscle Fat Control

It is the amount of adjustment to achieve the ideal muscle-fat balance based on current body composition. (+) to gain (-) to lose.
